Value Over Volume

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 – NIV

If you’ve ever been on an aeroplane when it starts it’s descent, you’ll know how tiny people can look on the ground. Even bodybuilders can appear tiny. When we think about how humongous the universe is, we are but a spec so isn’t it amazing that God still sees us?

If you’re in your house and you shout at the very top of your lungs, it’s unlikely that people on the next road will hear you, yet God hears us.

Growing up in church, I used to think that the louder you pray or sing out to God, the more meaningful your worship. (Hopefully you’ve got a decent voice or the person next to you won’t be too pleased.)

While I believe there’s a significance in volume, volume doesn’t always equal truthful worship. I’m sick of shouting at God and calling it worship. God hears us in the quiet too. When I lost my Dad 18 months ago, worship became a whisper in my bedroom.

“God, I’m tired, exhausted, desperate and devastated. In all of your supreme and gentle love, please help me.”

I believe God heard me just as much as he did in the times when I’ve shouted my worship. John Piper says true worship is valuing or treasuring God above all things.

Prayer:

Lord, i pray that our volume doesn’t always determine the value of our adoration to you, but rather as we explore different acts of worship, let us value You above all things.
